Bored of flicking through teens miming to crap tunes on YouTube? Swing by the Internet Archive [archive.org/movies] and take a trip back in time. Here they’ve dug up and stock piled loads of vids and clips from all over the place including some ace educational films from the 60s such as Our Mr Sun [archive.org]. There’s also a heap of clips from films produced by ‘industrial’ film company, Calvin [wikipedia] including out takes and non-commercial work such as their self-parody shown above entitled ‘Your Name Here’. ‘#Bfl O {ggGX = STwWcfl x 2s4′ is the name they gave to a film that takes a some lovingly languished-over shots of moving picture making equipment from the 60s and throws a bunch of hyperactive chimps into the equation [archive.org]. It’s odd.
Got a hankering to return the the days when Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock presents and The Outer Limits ruled the airwaves? Dip your toes in The Lost Room [scifi.com/lostroom] and you might start believing you’re back there… only with better production qualities (natch). Here’s the bit crappy trailer…
An oldie but a goody. Roman Coppola [romancoppolastudio.com] and Andy Bruntel [andybruntel.com] collaborate for adicolor on the theme of ‘red’. I like the banana. Roman is currently working on a slightly bizarre skin care line that uses ‘free range scavengers’. You can see a presentation about it here [youtube].
See more rad Paper Rad stuff at [paperread.org]. Coming soon: ebay, paypal, blogs, the internet… true, it says so on their website. :)
After a record month where I’ve only managed one lonely post so far, your humble author is getting back into the swing of this blogging malarkey… with a bit of The Chap performing live (cause they don’t got no music videos… yet. James Price [myspace.com/pricejames] is working on their new one). They are ace and fun and their new album Mega Breakfast is top [lorecordings.com]. Even more hot posting action to come… promise.
I’m not going to hail a return to the days when small boys were expected to tuck themselves away in the attic in order to construct elaborate miniature villages that lit up at night to later emerge, moth-like as fully formed men creatures (well, most of them anyway) but… model railways do seem kinda cool all of a sudden especially if you think of it as a form of escapism from the current durge of developer-led architecture plaguing our fair cities (well, London town anyways). Be your own urban planner! Collect models of building you’d like to populate your town or city with. You could do something along the lines of Will Alsop’s plan for Barnsley [alsoparchitects.com]. And just to prove the Germans are just as nutty about model railways as the British were, here’s an excellent video for a track called ‘Pilot’ by The Notwist (sorry about the crappy quality, they have pulled the original video off their website, the rotters!)
Modern Toss [moderntoss.com] is back… BACK! A second series has been commissioned by Channel 4 in the UK and airs mid-January. If you missed it the first time around you can grab a copy of the inventive, visually appealing and a little bit rude comedy series on DVD from this month and, of course, there’s always the books if you’re into reading and shit. That is all. See you later, yeah.
Perky Pop Practitioners, Saint Etienne [saintetienne.com] have been collaborating with film maker Paul Kelly ever since they released the film to accompany the album, Finisterre [plexifilm.com]. Together they are helping us hold onto the fragments of London’s recent past including many of the old style cafés that are disappearing under an avalanche of Starbucks and Pret a Mangers. They have put a bunch of their films up on YouTube too including this one about the New Piccadilly Café which closed only a couple of months ago, along with snippets from their latest feature, This is Tomorrow.
It’s good to share and this is too good not to. Boicozine spotted this whilst over at the ever excellent Manystuff blog [manystuff.over-blog.com]. It’s brief promo for the Ed Banger Records [headbangers.tv] compilation Boicozine featured ages back where So Me’s [myspace.com/20399307] illustrations come alive in a series of covers. It’s dead good.
